Chelsea Make Historic Last-Minute Signing
Chelsea made waves on Transfer Deadline Day as they signed Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez for a British-record fee of £106.8 million.
The Blues signed the 22-year-old Argentinian midfielder on Tuesday, 31 January, squeezing the deal in the final hours of the day. Fernandez was named “Best Young Player of the World Cup” in December last year, after Argentina’s 4-2 victory over France in Qatar.
The amount eclipses the £100m Manchester City paid 18 months ago for winger Jack Grealish from Aston Villa. The eight-and-half-year deal reportedly brings the Blues’ January spending to £288 million, an increase from the 270 million spent during the previous transfer window last year.
“The spending now from Chelsea is a staggering, eye-watering amount of money,” soccer reporter and pundit Ian Dennis said to an international publication after hearing the news.
Along with Fernandez, coach Graham Potter has brought in several other new players to reinforce the Blue’s ailing attack and defence.
New names on the roster include midfielder Mykhaylo Mudryk, defender Benoit Badiashile, and forwards Noni Madueke and Joao Felix, who joined on loan from Atletico Madrid.
The club has had a difficult start to 2023, finding themselves sitting in tenth place on the English Premier League table with 29 points.
